Increasing demand for certified development processes (ASPICE / SPICE) - or comprehensive and safety-critical systems (IEC 61508 / ISO26262) - are broadly followed in European industries. This trend is mainly driven by large OEMs, which tend to raise quality and safety standards of their suppliers. Furthermore, product liability plays a crucial role. In the event of damage, companies have to prove innocence through the utilization of recognized and certified development methods and processes.

If using Polarion for the documentation of certification projects, a few aspects must be considered:

• Complete and consistent traceability is required, but users often disregard a deep integration of link relationships to the source code. Moreover, the concurrent usage of further development tools often entails manual synchronisation. This creates a gap which can be closed with appropriate solutions.
  
  
• The mapping of Work Item-Workflow processes is managed quickly and easily with Polarion. The implementation of requirements, functions and a fixed approval process fulfills nearly all needs without compromise - but, for instance, what’s the workflow pattern of a SIL 4 project?
  
  
• Test documentation is essential for an application assessment. Besides an entire test coverage, the proof of tested document revisions is mandatory. Polarion QA provides a convenient option to store test results within the solution. In case of using model driven development, automated tests can also be conducted and documented by other tools. Marco Matuschek is part of the Willert Team since 2007. Initially, he worked in the in-house development team for code generation from UML models (i. a. Enterprise Architect and IBM Rational Rhapsody). Now his focus is on methods and processes in the area of requirements and test management. Apart from his profound knowledge of theoretical frameworks, he also trains customers in applying ALM and RM tools (Polarion, IBM Rational DOORS, DOORS Next Generation).

Daniel Morris is a member of the Polarion Software team and manages the customer training modules for all of Polarion Software products. Daniel has helped over hundreds of customers implement Polarion Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) tools that have improved their organizational processes. Daniel holds a degree in computer science from the University of Applied Science in Aachen, Germany.
