Polarion´s Powerful Application Lifecycle Management Solution Enables Compliance with Federal Aviation Authority DO-178B Certification Requirements
Alameda, CA (July 21, 2010) – Polarion Software, a leader in application lifecycle management and requirements management and a disruptive force in the software marketplace, has rapidly become the first choice Aerospace manufacturers seeking compliance with requirements set out in the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) DO-178B "Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification", a requirements-driven waterfall development methodology and one of the most stringent manufacturing standards in industry today.
FAA DO-178B provides guidance on designing, specifying, developing, testing and deploying software in safety-critical avionics systems. FAA scrutiny and enforcement of DO-178B, industry pressure, and aircraft equipment manufacturers´ own desire to evolve beyond cumbersome manual processes and fragmented point tool environments have led to increased interest in an integrated solution for process automation such Polarion ALM to enable compliance to this industry standard. Polarion ALM streamlines the DO-178B certification effort, closes verification and quality gaps, shortens project schedules, and significantly decreases costs. Aerospace customers using Polarion´s ALM solution for compliance include Northrop Grumman, US Air Force, Goodrich, Thales, Airbus S.A.S., and Bombardier.
Polarion helps aviation equipment manufacturers comply to DO-178B in the following ways:
- Project team can define and document processes and align project activities using Polarion ALM to Design Assurance Levels (DAL) assigned to each project stage, and query and report on this information at any point in the software lifecycle for software verification results
- Integrated software change and configuration management (SCCM) capabilities through a powerful Subversion repository maintains a complete audit trail and revision history of software change
- Polarion´s hundreds of templates provide teams with maximum flexibility in their software development approach, from traditional Waterfall, to Spiral, V-Model and through to CMMI to Agile. Each template includes a software quality assurance report. Templates can be customized and reused to satisfy a company´s development style and approach to DO-178B compliance.
- Automated workflow enforces process certification in accordance with FAA expectations and maintains an immutable record of software development activities throughout a project´s lifecycle. Role-based permissions ensure proper separation of duties in accordance with DAL requirements.
- Polarion´s top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top traceability support allows organizations to track each artifact component back to its origin and forward through every change and derivative with every attribute managed and maintained as an immutable, secure record. Polarion also offers one-to-one and one-to-many traceability and reporting, so that each artifact or work item can trace to multiple lower-level work items, while multiple higher-level work items can trace to the same lower-level work item.
